365 dagen. Dat is de tijd die me nog rest vooraleer ik begin aan mijn expeditie op de Lhotse in Nepal. Het wordt tevens mijn eerste trip naar de Himalaya. Een bestemming die ik bewust heb uitgesteld zodat ik kon opbouwen naar de climax. Na bergen te hebben beklommen in Afrika, de Alpen, de Kaukasus en het Andesgebergte wordt de Lhotse in de Himalaya dus het volgende doel.

Mijn trainingen zijn ondertussen al enkele maanden bezig en dus wordt het ook tijd op te kijken naar de praktische kant van de expeditie. Uitrusting weet je wel, want met een slaapzak van comfort 5 graden heb je op 8000 meter hoogte helemaal niets.

Ik hoop later dit jaar ook nog wat kleinere beklimmingen te doen in de Alpen, als corona dit toelaat.

365 days. That is the time left for me before I start my expedition on the Lhotse in Nepal. It will also be my first trip to the Himalayas. A destination that I consciously postponed so that I could build up to the climax. After climbing mountains in Africa, the Alps, the Caucasus and the Andes, the Lhotse in the Himalayas becomes the next goal.

My training has been going on for several months now, so it is time to look up at the practical side of the expedition. Equipment, you know, because a comfort 5 degrees sleeping bag is useless at a height of 8000 meters.

I also hope to do some smaller climbs in the Alps later this year, if corona allows this.

Second Book

365 dagen is ook de deadline die ik mezelf heb gegeven om mijn tweede boek af te werken. Een project die al enkele jaren ondertussen naar de zijkant werd opgeschoven. Maar gezien het onderwerp van het boek, de bergen en waarom ik ben begonnen met het bedwingen ervan, zou het mooi zijn om tegen het einde van dit jaar een afgewerkte kopie er van te hebben. Helaas zal deze enkel in het Nederlands beschikbaar zijn.

365 days is also the deadline I gave myself to finish my second book. A project that has been pushed aside for several years now. But given the subject of the book, the mountains, and why I started conquering them, it would be nice to have a finished copy of it by the end of this year. Unfortunately, it will only be available in Dutch.

In the Footsteps of Edmund Hillary

Naast het schrijven van mijn tweede boek, zal ik proberen om de komende weken ook nog een schets van de route van de expeditie te geven in deze blog. De reden waarom ik voor Lhotse koos, is dan ook omdat het dezelfde weg volgt als dat sir Edmund Hillary beklom toen hij in 1953 de Everest beklom. De route loopt dan ook gelijk tot aan kamp 4.

Ik moet dan ook toegeven dat ik er naar uitkijk om dezelfde passages te beklimmen als die waar ik de laatste bijna tien jaar over heb gelezen. Van de Khumbu Icefall tot de South Col en Western Cwm. Het aftellen is dan ook begonnen.

Besides writing my second book, I will try to give a sketch of the route of the expedition in this blog in the coming weeks. The reason why I chose Lhotse is because it follows the same path as Sir Edmund Hillary climbed when he climbed Everest in 1953. The route is therefore equal to camp 4.

I must admit that I am looking forward to climbing the same passages as the ones I have read about for almost a decade. From the Khumbu Icefall to the South Col and Western Cwm. The countdown has started.
