Een jaar geleden zaten midden in de Covid-19 crisis. Mijn tijd thuis spendeerde ik dan maar aan het uitstippelen van enkele grote avonturen voor wanneer de Europese buitengrenzen terug open gingen. Een van die avonturen was mijn Lhotse Expeditie die nog steeds gepland staat voor het voorjaar van 2022, een ander mijn Packraftexpeditie doorheen de Yukon en Alaska. Deze laatste stond gepland voor… wel nu eigenlijk. Had alles ´normaal´ geweest, dan zat ik nu wellicht ergens in Denali NP, Alaska.

A year ago we were in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis. I spent my time at home planning out some great adventures for when the European external borders opened again. One of those adventures was my Lhotse Expedition still scheduled for spring 2022, another my Packraft Expedition across the Yukon and Alaska. This last one was scheduled for… well now actually. If everything had been ‘normal’, I might now be somewhere in Denali NP, Alaska.

Forest Fires and Earthquakes

Hoewel… hoe ver de expeditie uiteindelijk zou gegaan zijn is maar de vraag. Natuurrampen hebben de laatste weken verschillende werelddelen geteisterd. Van de overstromingen in België tot hittegolven en de bosbranden in West-Canada, net het gebied waar ik op dat moment doorkruist hebben. Hadden de bosbranden me nog niet kunnen tegenhouden, dan was er nog altijd de aardbevingengolf in Alaska met als uitschieter die van 8,2 op de Schaal van Richter. En het bijhorende tsunami alarm.

Laat ons hopen dat dit geen slecht voorteken is voor de expeditie op de Lhotse volgend jaar.

Although… how far the expedition would have gone in the end is open to question. Natural disasters have ravaged several continents in recent weeks. From the floods in Belgium to heat waves and forest fires in Western Canada, just the area I crossed at that time. If the wildfires hadn’t stopped me, there was still the Alaskan earthquake wave, peaking at 8.2 on the Richter scale. And the accompanying tsunami alarm.

Let’s hope this isn’t a bad omen for next year’s expedition on the Lhotse.
