Het gebeurt vaak dat Linsay en ik het wel eens hebben over onze droom om te emigreren naar het buitenland. De bestemming die dan vaak over onze lippen komt is Zweden. ‘Bah, zo’n koud land.’, krijgen we dan te horen van onze familie. ‘En er is daar toch niets?’ Toch wel! Bossen, bossen en nog eens bossen. En op de plaatsen waar geen bossen staan? Daar ligt een prachtig meer.

It happens a lot that Linsay and I are talking about our dream to emigrate to a foreign country. The destination that often escapes our lips is Sweden. ‘Bah, such a cold country.’, we often get to hear of our relatives. ‘There is nothing there.’ There is! Forests, forests and more forests. And on the places where there is no forest? There you’ll find a beautiful lake.

Je merkt wellicht al snel dat we ons hart hebben verloren aan het Scandinavische land. De passie voor Zweden begon aanvankelijk bij Linsay, na haar rondreis door het zuiden zo’n 7 jaar geleden. Uiteindelijk kreeg ook ik de laatste jaren de kans om als reisbegeleider in Zweden te werken. Het resulteerde in een even grote passie voor het land. Ik ben dan ook in mijn nopjes als ik op het vliegtuig zit richting Göteborg.

It doesn’t take much to notice we fell in love with the Scandinavian country. This passion for Sweden started with Linsay, after having traveled through the southern regions about 7 years ago. Eventually, these last few years I had the opportunity to work as a travel guide in Sweden. It resulted in the same passion for the country. Obviously, I’m delighted to be in a plane again towards Göteborg.

Bohusleden

Deze maal niet als reisbegeleider, al zit de waarheid er niet ver van. Het doel is om de Bohusleden te wandelen, een tocht van net geen 400 kilometer die eindigt bij de Noorse grens. Dit om het gebied te verkennen voor de reis die je met ons kan boeken.

This time not to work as a travel guide, even though the truth isn’t far from it. The goal is to walk the Bohusleden, a hike of nearly 400 kilometers, ending close to the Norwegian border. This to explore the terrain for an adventure you can book with us!

West-Flemish

Ik ben amper een paar uur onderweg als ik de eerste Zweden tegen kom. ‘Hey’, klinkt het spontaan, ondanks het feit dat Zweden als een gesloten volk bekend staan. De begroeting klinkt als West-Vlaams in de oren. En dat is verre van het enige Zweedse woord dat iets weg heeft van ons dialect. Waar de doorsnee toerist moeite zal hebben om de uitgang te vinden, voel ik me als West-Vlaming eindelijk thuis met het bordje ‘Utgang’. Misschien daarom dat Linsay en ik ons hier makkelijk thuis voelen?

I’m only a few hours on my way when I encounter the first Swedish people. ‘Hey’, it sounds spontaneous, despite the fact that Sweden is known for having a distant kind of people. The greeting sounds West-Flemish. And that is not the only Swedish word that is quite similar to our dialect. Most tourists will have difficulty to find the exit, but as a West-Flemish person myself I finally feel at home when I see the sign with ‘Utgang’. Maybe that is the reason why Linsay and I feel at home here easily?

No Zlatan, no World Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is wellicht een van de bekendste Zweden. De Zweedse voetballer staat naast zijn ongelooflijke talent bekend voor zijn nogal (eufemisme) arrogante – maar grappige – uitspraken. ‘Without Zlatan, there is no World Cup’, liet hij ooit eens vallen. Zlatan is hiermee echter niet het toonbeeld van de schuchtere en nuchtere Zweed, dus veel Zlatans ben ik nog niet tegengekomen. Het WK gaat straks echter wel door, zonder Zlatan. Al moet iedere voetballiefhebber toegeven, dat we hem straks toch gaan missen. Al is het maar voor zijn interviews.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic probably is one of the most famous Swedish people. The Swedish football star is besides his incredible skills known for his kinda (euphemism) arrogant – but hilarious – oneliners. ‘Without Zlatan, there is no World Cup.’, he once said. With this, Zlatan is not the typical image of the timid and down-to-earth Swede. So I haven’t met many Zlatans on my way yet. The World Cup will get started in a few weeks, without Zlatan. Even though every football enthusiast will admit that he will miss him. Even if it’s just for his interviews.
